Crews from “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” will hold a 5K walkathon in Atlanta on Oct. 5 to honor Sarah Jones, the camera assistant who died in February while working on the set of the film “Midnight Rider.”
Jones was previously a crew member on “The Vampire Diaries.” She died after being hit by a train while filming scenes for “Midnight Rider” in Georgia.
Jones’ parents, Richard and Elizabeth Jones, and her brother Eric will lead the walkers. The Jones family currently has a wrongful death lawsuit pending against the filmmakers and distributors of the film.
In the aftermath of Jones’ death, people within the industry have held numerous vigils to raise awareness of on—set safety measures for crew members. To continue reminding people of the necessity for such protections, the 5K participants plan to live-Tweet during the walk and raise money through online donation links.
All proceeds from the walk will benefit the Sarah Jones Film Foundation, which was created by Jones’ parents after her death. The foundation is slated to use the proceeds for set safety awareness initiatives, educational scholarships and increased social media outreach.
