Jack Ryan is setting up shop at Amazon.
The streaming service has landed the TV show based on the hard-charging character created by novelist Tom Clancy in the 1980s. “Lost” alum Graham Roland and Carlton Cuse are shepherding the adaptation for Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Paramount TV and Skydance TV.
Amazon has given a series commitment to the project, rather than going through the process of producing a pilot and soliciting viewer feedback. The number of episodes is still to be determined.
The series package was shopped last week to a handful of outlets, including Fox, NBC, Netflix and A&E. Jack Ryan has been featured in 11 Clancy novels, starting in 1984 with “The Hunt for Red October.”
The character began as an ex-Marine who is drafted into the CIA while working as a investment banker. Through the course of the books Ryan moves into politics and becomes president in the most recent title, “Commander-in-Chief,” published this year.
The character has been featured in five feature films to date, all from Paramount but with four actors tackling the role: Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and most recently, Chris Pine in 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.” Cuse at present is juggling three series, FX’s “The Strain,” A&E’s “ Bates Motel” and USA’s upcoming “Colony.”
